16th ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2003 September 6, at Webster Falls SIN AND MERCY ![]() |
Questions for thought stimulation - hints for those who decide to write a paper, to be co-organizer or to be patron
- The understanding of sin and mercy in the Bible, politics, psychology, art, etc.
- The origin and nature of sin, the purpose of mercy.
- How is mercy related to the "eye for an eye" of the Old Testament, the karma
of the Hinduism, and to the teachings of other world religions?
- How should we love our enemies, if they show no signs of repentance? How is our love
different from merely tolerating them?
- How should we understand the decline of numbers people practising confession?
- When is a situation ready to loosen binding and mercy?
- Does mercy require repentance or penance? Is repentance valid only after restitution?
- Is reconciliation possible without absolution?
- Who can practice mercy on community level, towards the community that sinned?
(e.g.. war crime)
Arguable sentences, or propose new ones:
- And they all drank of it… (Mar 14,23). Everyone, which includes also Judas. Think about it. Many people suffer today, because of Canon laws they can't participate in the most important common act of the community. They feel excluded. Is their sin bigger, than the sin of Judas? (U. Kiss SJ)
- Unfortunately many Christians are convinced, that God loves good people and punishes the evil one. It seems that even Christians have hard times to believe that God loves them unconditionally and forgives then even when they are sinners or criminals. (S. Borbély SJ)
- Christianity tells people to repent and promises them forgiveness.
It therefore has nothing (as far as I know) to say to people who do not know they have
done anything to repent of and who do not feel that they need any forgiveness.
(C.S. Lewis)
