15th ANNUAL CONFERENCE

2002 September 7, at Webster Falls
theme

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CHURCH AND STATE
We are waiting for you!

Questions for thought stimulation  -  hints for those who decide to write a paper, to be co-organizer or to be patron

- What is the vocation and mission of Church and State?
- Where is this commission from?
- What is the main difference between their deliberative and executive bodies?
- What is the difference between their punishing and rewarding methods? Can they use each other’s methods?
- How far progressed their separation after the decisions of Vatican II (Gaudium et spes, 76)?
- Are the clergy interfere the control of communal life (in other words into the politics)?
- Is it a private affair of the moral behaviour of the State's leaders?
- How possible to reconcile the consciences liberty (as principal authority) with their leading?
- How relate the eternal truth of the Church to the relative truth of the State?
- Is the relation rank equal between the different Churches and States?
- How formed the relationship of the different religions and States?
- What kind of changes can we expect in the future?

Arguable sentences, or propose new ones:

- When the Church becomes part of the State, then she is used by the State for oppression, and the Church makes her commandments to state law, so the sins against God will be punished by the state, which goes against the freedom of conscience.

- Some think Church and state must be separated even more; others dream about the good old times of the Middle Ages, when the two were virtually one. Some say the Church takes uncritically over undesirable elements from culture; others think more needs to be done (more democracy in the Church?)

- The influence of the Church is minimal; when making important decisions, no one really listens to the pope, or to the bishops; might priests participate in elections or party-politics?

- The Church's moral code is drifting further and further away from the state laws, especially in the areas of sexuality (abortion, anti-conception, marriage), politics (war, pacifism) and bioethics (cloning, euthanasia). Is the ethical conduct of our politicians our business?

- Only negative news receive attention about the Church.

- The faith-related subjects in the Education are limited more and more; support from governments is decreasing.

- Hostility towards Christian symbols and holidays (Sunday); public prayers are disappearing from schools and government institutions.
