Heineken ‘Behind the Scenes’

Join us this Saturday (July 24th ) as the Heineken ‘Behind the Scenes’ event series continues with an inside look at two of the most important art galleries in the city.

Our day begins at 3:00pm sharp at the Angell Gallery where we'll experience the galleries annual summer group show. Guests will then make their way over to the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art for an artist lead discussion by Daivd Han, a film, video and digital media artist living in Toronto. For his work, Margaret Learns to Drive from There to Here, a work in the exhibition Empire of Dreams, David Han's video work is projected onto the windows of an 1980s station wagon, installed in the main gallery at MOCCA. To experience this interactive work, the viewer is invited to sit in the car and watch the narrative unfold.

I'm pleased to announce the return of the Heineken Behind The Lens Tour at Scotiabank CONTACT 2010.

As technology evolves we witness the transformation of photography alongside the shifting social, political and cultural events of our times. In this era of instant information images are stimulating unprecedented change in the way we communicate. CONTACT 2010 will consider the ways in which photography informs and transforms human behaviour . Photojournalism and socially concerned documentary photography will provide a realist-based examination of the emotional and political impact of images and their effect on society and culture.
Join us each Saturday afternoon in May for the Heineken Behind the Lens Tour, an exclusive interactive tour of Scotiabank CONTACT. Go behind the scenes with top photographers and other culture mavens as they share curated insights on fascinating photography from an insider’s vantage point. Each tour, located in one of Toronto's unique neighborhoods, will end at a local watering hole for discussion, snacks and the opportunity to enjoy a cold Heineken.

Heineken - Behind The Lens

On Saturday March 6th at 3pm, Heineken would like to take you back Behind the Lens at the CONTACT Gallery.

CONTACT curators will lead the Heineken Behind the Lens Experience into the photographic world of artist Sammy Baloji. Images and sound examine contemporary African identity through the ethnography, architecture, and urban landscape of Lakasi.

The photographs of the reconstructed streetscape, with its obvious signs of a civilization built before, during, and after the Belgian colonial period, reveal the artist's interest in the daily life of Congolese people. As a result of the strict government ban on photographing public buildings, Vues de Likasi is a rare depiction of the city's cultural and industrial legacies.

Join us Behind The Lens with Heineken as we take you inside the mind of one of Africa’s leading artistic figures…

Sammy Baloji was born in 1978 and lives in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo. His work has been exhibited extensively in Africa and in Europe, including the Musée du Quai Branly, Paris and the Royal Museum for Central Africa, Tervuren, Belgium. Baloji was recently featured in CAPE07, Cape Town, Le Tarmac de la Villette, Paris, Rencontres africaines de la photographie, Mali and le Mois de la Photo, Montreal. A traveling exhibition of his work is currently in preparation by the Museum for African Art, New York. Baloji is represented by Axis Gallery, New York.

At long last we are relieved to announce the opening of a new exhibition of work at THRUSH HOLMES EMPIRE (THE).

"NEW LUXE", comprised primarily of sculptures with supporting paintings will open this Friday, Feb 12 from 7pm-12am.

Music will be provided by DJ Derek Mainella (AKA DMT)
