The Promise of Peace
by Roland Rivard

«The word “peace” resumes what the world is searching for and what
God wants to give to the humanity. It expresses what will be the life in the
In the Old Testament, this word was the expression of what the believers were longing for: a life of harmony, without divisions, hates, violence, suffering... It is, I suppose, what expresses the salutations SHALOM among the members of the people of God, and also the Arab salutations: «Salaam Alaicum» (I am not sure of the orthography). It is to wish to the man we meet that he may get what is his deeper expectations.
Peace is what Jesus-Christ transmitted to those who believe in him and keep his word (Jn 14, 23): «I leave you peace; I give you my peace» (Jn 14, 27). It is the first word he said to his disciples after his resurrection: «Peace be with you» (Jn 20, 21). It is also among the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Gálatas 5, 22). Jesus is the one who came in order to fulfil the expectations of The Old Testament and of all the humanity.
I think that all use of violence and war is against the revelation of the Holy Scripture in the Old and in the New Testament. Since the beginning, since the sin of Cain (Genesis 4), the Holy Scripture condemns all kind of killings, hating, and divisions. Its source is the heart of men, who needs to convert himself and accept to live loving God and - it is similar, says Jesus-Christ - loving all his human brothers and sisters. Nobody ever can be justified to kill his brother or to do any voluntary harm to him (Exodus 20, 13-17).
If the Christians would understand and live the fifth chapter of the Gospel of S.
Matthew, they could rapidly change the world. It is what Gandhi understood and
made him to develop a non-violent way to resist and to struggle against his
enemies. In my opinion, the Pope should proclaim as the greater Saints of the
last century these men who struggle and offered their life in a non-violent way
in order to conquer the dignity of his peoples: Gandhi of India, Nelson Mandela
of South Africa, and Martin Luther King of United States, and many other
defensors of Human Rights in the world. They were living examples of how to
live the Holy Scripture, mostly the Sermon on the
I believe in peace and in the chances for a lasting peace, because I believe that the Kingdom of God is near (Mc. 1, 15), and that it will be fulfilled, thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus-Christ, and all his followers, who prefer to die at the place of killing or revenging. But we will still have to pray for a long time: «Thy Kingdom come», and accept to compromise ourselves at the expense of our own life, until all the men and women accept one another as brothers and sisters, until we respect and love each other, until we accept to share everything we have and are. Many people of good will will still have to offer their live for the sake of love.

The role of the Church is to proclaim the Word of God, which assures us about this victory, and to invite all the believers and people of good will to follow the example of love, forgiveness and sacrifice of Jesus-Christ.»
